Latvia is one of six target countries in the BiG>East project. The objective is to promote biogas as renewable energy source and as waste treatment technology. This is achieved by the implementation of training courses for farmers and mobilisation campaigns for decision makers. Dedicated studies on biogas opportunities, policies and barriers in Latvia support this initiative.

For further information on the BiG>East project please download the poster and flyer here.

Biogas Opportunities in Latvia

The BiG>East Consortium is investigating the opportunities for biogas implementation in Latvia. This includes an assessment of the biogas potential in Latvia. The following studies were elaborated in the framework of the BiG>East project:

- Assessment of existing biogas installations in Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Latvia, Romania, and Slovenia

- Technical review of the utilisation of waste material for biogas production in Eastern Europe and Latvia

- Estimation of the potential feedstock availability for biogas production in Eastern Europe and Latvia

- Assessment of the agricultural structure for biogas production in Eastern Europe and Latvia

- Biogas purification and feed-in opportunities in Europe and Latvia

- Technical opportunities for the utilisation of biogas in Eastern Europe and Latvia

- Impact of biogas production in Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Latvia, Romania and Slovenia

- Biogas Potential in Latvia: Summary Report

- Biogas Site Selection Guideline

- Assessment Studies for Specific Biogas Sites in the target region of Latvia

- Biogas Show Case in the target Region of Latvia

Policies and Barriers for Biogas in Latvia

Policies are important in order to create a favourable framework for biogas production and use in Latvia. On the other side, there are Barriers which hinder the application of biogas technologies. BiG>East investigated policies and barriers in Latvia:

Biogas Training in Latvia

In the framework of the BiG>East project three training courses for farmers are implemented in Latvia. The BiG>East biogas training courses in Latvia will be organised on 11-16 January 2010 in Riga, Auce and Madona:

11.-12.01.2010 – Riga, Ekodoma, Ltd. office, Noliktavas Street 3-3
13.-14.01.2010 – Auce, LLU MPS „Vecauce”, Auce castle
15.-16.01.2010 – Madona, Madona Regional Environmental Board, Blaumaņa Street 7

Detailed agenda will be available soon.

Training material as well as a biogas handbook including an economic calculation tool was elaborated and can be downloaded here:

- Biogas Training Handbook

- Excel Calculation Tool for Economic Analysis of Biogas Plants

- Questionnaire for the Evaluation of Biogas Training

Mobilisation Campaigns for Decision Makers

In the framework of the BiG>East project two mobilisation campaigns for decision makers are implemented in Latvia.

The first mobilisation campaign in Latvia

More than 70 participants attended the BiG>East Mobilisation Campaign in Auce, Latvia, on 4 February 2009. The stakeholders were informed in six presentations about the state-of-the-art in biogas technology and discussed biogas production opportunities in Latvia. The campaign included a site-visit to the first Baltic agricultural biogas plant in Vecauce. Please find the agenda here (English, Latvian).

Download of the presentations:

- The BiG>East Project, DOMINIK RUTZ, WIP Renewable Energies, Germany

-The current situation and outlook on Biogas market in Germany and Europe, MICHAEL KÖTTNER, German Biogas and Bioenergy Society, Germany

- Biogas from waste material – experience from a biogas plant operator, TOBIAS FINSTERWALDER, Finsterwalder Umwelttechnik GmbH & Co. KG, Germany

- Biogas situation in Latvia, DAGNIJA BLUMBERGA, Riga Technical University, Latvia
