Bulgaria

Bulgaria is one of six target countries in the BiG>East project. The objective is to promote biogas as renewable energy source and as waste treatment technology. This is achieved by the implementation of training courses for farmers and mobilisation campaigns for decision makers. Dedicated studies on biogas opportunities, policies and barriers in Bulgaria support this initiative.

For further information on the BiG>East project please download the poster and flyer here.

Biogas Opportunities in Bulgaria

The BiG>East Consortium is investigating the opportunities for biogas implementation in Bulgaria. This includes an assessment of the biogas potential in Bulgaria. The following studies were elaborated in the framework of the BiG>East project:

- Assessment of existing biogas installations in Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Latvia, Romania, and Slovenia

- Technical review of the utilisation of waste material for biogas production in Eastern Europe and Bulgaria

- Estimation of the potential feedstock availability for biogas production in Eastern Europe and Bulgaria

- Assessment of the agricultural structure for biogas production in Eastern Europe and Bulgaria

- Biogas purification and feed-in opportunities in Europe and Bulgaria

- Technical opportunities for the utilisation of biogas in Eastern Europe and Bulgaria

- Impact of biogas production in Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Latvia, Romania and Slovenia

- Biogas Potential in Bulgaria: Summary Report

- Biogas Site Selection Guideline

- Assessment Studies for Specific Biogas Sites in the target region of Bulgaria

- Biogas Show Case in the target Region of Bulgaria

- Local implementation strategies for biogas in Bulgaria

Policies and Barriers for Biogas in Bulgaria

Policies are important in order to create a favourable framework for biogas production and use in Bulgaria. On the other side, there are Barriers which hinder the application of biogas technologies. BiG>East investigated policies and barriers in Bulgaria:

- Biogas Barriers in Bulgaria

- Biogas Roadmap for Bulgaria

Biogas Training in Bulgaria

In the framework of the BiG>East project three training courses for farmers are implemented in Bulgaria.

Training material as well as a biogas handbook including an economic calculation tool was elaborated and can be downloaded here:

- Biogas Training Handbook (English)

- Summary of the Bulgarian Handbook (English)

- Excel Calculation Tool for Economic Analysis of Biogas Plants

- Questionnaire for the Evaluation of Biogas Training
